About the Artist
It is widely suspected (though difficult to prove without time travel and a decent cocktail) that at the precise moment Robert Palmer was polishing the final lyrics to “She Makes My Day” in the late 1980s, a young Khristie Denice Barratt did her first pencil drawing of an erect penis.
Coincidence? Perhaps. Circumcised? What do you think!?
Based in Meanjin (Brisbane), Khristie is a contemporary artist whose practice drifts and sometimes saunters through the intersections of materiality, gesture, and perception. Her subject matter slips easily between the tender and the provocative: from erotica, to childhood moments, and everything in between.
The result is a visual language that feels both deeply personal and mischievously universal.
Khristie works across screen-printing, painting, and mixed media, often favouringn vintage wallpaper in place of artist stock. Her pieces are equally at home gracing a pristine gallery wall, lounging in a collector’s living room, or perfectly placed in your Wank Bank.
There’s a deliberate tension in her work, sitting cutely between spontaneity and restraint, innocence and knowing—that keeps the viewer slightly off-balance, in the best possible way.
